The site Deadline announced that Watts himself asked for his departure in order to take a break and return with fresh ideas for the fourth Spider-Man movie in the MCU.
Kevin Feige, president of Marvel Studios, confirmed the departure of Watts, but this does not mean that the director has cut ties with The House of Ideas.
“Collaborating with Jon on the Spider-Man movies has been a real pleasure. We hoped to continue our work with him to bring the Fantastic Four into the MCU, but we understand and support his reasons for withdrawing from it. We are optimistic that we will have the opportunity to work together again at some point along the way.”.
Jon Watts himself declared that before taking the fourth Spider-Man film he will work on the script and direction of a film with George Clooney and Brad Pitt for digital platforms.
“Doing three Spider-Man movies was an incredible, life-changing experience for me. I am forever grateful to have been a part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe for seven years. I am hopeful that we will work together again and I can’t wait to see the incredible vision of the Fantastic Four come to life.”.
Who will be the new strategist of the first family of Superheroes?
In December 2020 Kevin Feige announced the return of Fantastic Four to the big screen under the direction of Jon Watts, although its release date is still unknown.
Fantastic Four has come to the cinema three times, the first in a 1994 film, which came direct to video. 20th Century Fox produced the 2005 Fantastic Four, and the 2007 sequel Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer, both directed by Tim Story.
In 2015, filmmaker Josh Trank directed the reboot of this team in a film that passed with more pain than glory in theaters, whose sequel was immediately cancelled.
Fantastic Four will be part of phase four of the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Marvel Studios executives are looking for the cast of this film, and now a new director.
