The only cargo port in the European Union is about to be made official. At the beginning of 2020, the European Parliament supported this initiative in a vote with 582 votes in favor, 40 against and 37 abstentions. Everything indicates that the law is about to be proposed, at least that is what they indicate from Reuters, which ensure that next Thursday the European Commission will propose the legislation on the single port in the European Union.
The legislation will be adopted throughout 2022 and the member countries will have one year to adapt it to their different legislations. After that, manufacturers will have one more year to start implementing it. This leaves us in 2024 as the deadline to see the single port if all deadlines are met.
The main reason for passing this law is to reduce the environmental and economic impact of having multiple different chargers. Although the Union itself recognizes that we have gone from 30 different chargers in 2009 to just 3, USB-C, microUSB (no longer in use) and Lighting.
The law focuses on smartphones, tablets, headphones, cameras and speakers, leaving out important devices such as laptops. In addition, Europe agrees with Apple since the law will also force manufacturers to stop selling a new charger with each smartphone, they should offer consumers the possibility of using an old one.
What can Apple do?
In principle, although it is not specified, It is understood that the single port that all mobiles must use is USB-C. Apple has made important decisions regarding that port, and uses it on numerous devices. However, he has been reluctant to change the Lightning port of the iPhone.
Apple has always been reluctant to face this type of law, considering that “stifle innovation”. If there is only one port for everyone mandatory, no one will endeavor to improve it and design a new one.
However, that does not seem to matter to Europe, nor does it seem to matter to Europe. tons of electronic waste that will be created when all the Lightning cables and accessories disappear, a port that Apple has been using since 2012.
Apple is going to have only two options. You can implement the USB-C connection on the iPhone and continue as before, or you can take the step that so many rumors have heard and get rid of the loading port. If the iPhone charges only wirelessly and has no ports, Apple could circumvent this law.
