Up to now, the variations in the events of the Marvel Cinematic Universe in What would happen if…? (AC Bradley, since 2021) have been, at least, curious, because they do not resemble the past or future scripts of the same. The climax in that sense is in the episode “What If … Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” (1×04), but the most unusual idea had been that of “What If … T’Challa Became a Star-Lord?” (1×02) because it introduces a character in an alien plot with a maneuver difficult to imagine.
In other words, it is not unthinkable that the apocalypse of the chapter “What If … Zombies ?!” (1×05), for example, it may occur to a screenwriter who likes to mix different narrative concepts; if it weren’t already in the marvel comics, of course. But, to reach certain combinations, you have to give the coconut a lot. And that effort and strangeness are what he offers us “What If … Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?” (1×06).
The narrative daring of ‘What if …?’
However, despite the interesting twist of this episode from What would happen if…?, which includes sharp ironic references to what would have happened without the Nexus event that makes this particular story possible and, oh, a pivotal scene from Avengers: Endgame (Joe and Anthony Russo, 2019), and their sensational action it does not deceive us as much as the best because it shines less.
Yes, screenwriters AC Bradley and Matthew Chauncey (The Bottom 3: Tales of Arcadia), director Bryan Andrews (The Adventures of Jackie Chan) through, they have reproduced the personality of Tony Stark very well, whose face belongs to Robert Downey Jr. (Sherlock Holmes) but here Mick Wingert (Nightmares 2: Halloween Night) as in “What If … The World Lost Its Mightiest Heroes?” (1×03) and ten other times from the video game Marvel: Contest of Champions (Kabam and Kody Sabourin, 2014). But that’s not enough to chase us into hypnosis either.
In this matter, it would be necessary to place “What If … Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?” in perspective a few steps ahead of “What If … Captain Carter Were the First Avenger?” (1×01), which is already a pure Marvel show. In a certain sequence, he takes a run, and we see the elusive T’Challa (Chadwick Boseman) as a kind of Bruce Wayne in his dangerous night labors, and the dramatic decisions, as in previous chapters, are shown with greater daring than in the feature films of the Cinematographic Universe. Because it’s not about the main plot and they can afford it.
The injustice of hateful comparisons
In these circumstances, do not be unfair to this adequate proposal from What would happen if…?, in which women are smarter than men, with all their power and arrogance more or less visible. The infamous intrigue by Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) is revealed to us in an intelligent way, without haste and in due time, and the indisputable coherence of his conduct in light of the motivations that he harbors in Black panther (Ryan Coogler, 2018) cannot be doubted.
On the other hand, they also give us moments of great audiovisual power in animated fighting compositions, which Marvel knows how to show off according to what we are accustomed to as spectators; either in the real images of most of his works or in the illustrated format of this one. We have been able to verify it with Black widow not long ago, these weeks with Shang-Chi and the legend of the Ten Rings (Cate Shortland, Destin Daniel Cretton, 2021) and now with “What If … Killmonger Rescued Tony Stark?”
What happens is that it seems to us that it could be improved because we compare it with the amazement that “What If … Doctor Strange Lost His Heart Instead of His Hands?” Produced us, and this chapter loses out, of course. But not everything can be hallucinated in each of the deliveries of What would happen if…? So it seems convenient to hold the horses and enjoy the narrative simplicity almost always in this Marvel superhero saga.
