Not even FromSoftware I expected something like Elden Ring was going to sell so well, so it certainly came as an incredible surprise to them when they saw that their new masterpiece had already reached 12 million copies sold worldwide. Due to this success, the Japanese studio is already considering taking the IP “beyond the realm of video games”.
As part of the press release where they revealed the sales figures, a rather interesting statement is also included. And it is that FromSoftware has confirmed the universe of Elden Ring which will be reaching other media.
“Please look forward to more of Elden Ring as an IP (characters and other intellectual property) in hopes of expanding beyond the gaming realm.”
Yasuo Miyakawa, president and CEO from bandai namco reiterated this with his own statements:
“A lot of effort went into creating Elden Ring so that we could exceed the expectations of fans around the world. In this way, we will continue to strive to expand the brand beyond the game, and into the daily lives of all users.”
Everything indicates that the popularity of the game prompted Bandai Namco and FromSoftware go ahead with the Elden Ring universe itself. It seems that we will be seeing this brand appear in other media, and at this point, a novelization by George RR Martin would make all the sense in the world, but perhaps his ambitions go beyond this.
Publisher’s note: If true, it will be the first time we’ve seen any FromSoftware IP have such a major expansion. It’s also a bit worrying that its developers want to adapt the game into a movie or TV series, but the results, in the right hands, could be very good.
