Edo Mortara could well be named Berlin’s adopted son. The Swiss driver is signing a perfect performance at Tempelhof Airport after achieving pole and victory on Saturday and repeating the first position on the Formula E grid on Sunday. With a time of 1:05.972, Mortara has managed to prevail in the second classification of the Berlin ePrix after beating Robin Frijns in the grand final for almost half a minute. Nyck de Vries and André Lotterer will start on the second row of the grid on a route that today runs in the opposite direction.
The second classification began at the Tempelhof track, to be disputed clockwise unlike yesterday, with a group stage in which the Stoffel Vandoorne imposed his law in Group A. The Mercedes EQ driver set a 1m07.115s to beat Robin Frijs by two tenths. Lucas Di Grassi and Nick Cassidy also made it to the quarterfinals, thus eliminating Mitch Evans. For its part, Edo Mortara ruled in Group B with a time of 1:06.753. Nyck de Vries, António Félix Da Costa and André Lotterer jumped to the quarterfinals, but not Jean-Eric Vergne.
The ‘KO’ phase began with a tight duel between André Lotterer and Stoffel Vandoorne in which the Porsche driver prevailed over the leader. The second cross of rooms fell on the side of Robin Frijns after beating António Félix Da Costa by 14 thousandths. The third match left Nyck de Vries the winner against Lucas Di Grassi, in a duel of Mercedes machinery. By last, Edo Mortara beat Nick Cassidyalthough the Venturi driver drags 80 penalty positions for changing various components of his car and will start last.
Thus, a first semifinal duel was drawn between André Lotterer and Robin Frijns in which the victory was for the second. The Envision driver beat Lotterer by a tenth and a half and won the first ticket to the grand final. In the second ‘semi’, Edo Mortara hit the table and beat Nyck de Vries by four tenths. The Swiss repeated his overwhelming performance in the last round of qualifying, since Mortara set a 1m05.972s to take pole by half a second over Robin Frijns.
Thus, Edo Mortara will start in first position on the grid for the second consecutive day, in this case ahead of Robin Frijns, Nyck de Vries and André Lotterer. For the times recorded in the quarterfinals, António Félix Da Costa will start fifth, with Lucas Di Grassi sixth and leader Stoffel Vandoorne seventh. Despite not getting into the quarterfinals, Jean-Eric Vergne will start in eighth position after benefiting from the suspension of Nick Cassidy. For his part, Mitch Evans will start ninth and Oliver Rowland tenth.
