Yes, storing and carrying your driving license on your mobile phone seems to be an ever-closer reality. This is an advantage for many, as we will see in more detail below.
The General Directorate of Traffic (DGT) plans to make a big leap with a new mobile application called «miDGT». In this, you can carry your driving license on your mobile, as well as make many other inquiries and basic procedures, digitally.
It seems that physical driving licenses are numbered. Soon it will be enough to take the mobile and have the application installed to be able to use it when necessary. Finally, Traffic modernizes and advances.
According to the DGT, this official application will greatly facilitate the procedures for users, since nowadays mobile phones are used for practically everything. It will also serve as a reminder for issues such as the renewal of your driving license or to remind us that we have outstanding fines to pay.
Part of the objective is to streamline many of the procedures that previously had to be carried out on a mandatory basis at the corresponding Traffic Headquarters. With that system, a driver could spend up to mid-morning waiting to solve his diligence.
An app to make everything easier and simpler
There are many steps that can already be carried out from the DGT page, but there are people who prefer to come in person to manage them, given their complexity. However, we reiterate that with miDGT, carrying out procedures will be much easier and faster for most users, since its use will be very intuitive.
Check the remaining points of the card, request an appointment, pay fees or fines … these are questions that we can consult and manage from our mobile phone and that will make our lives a little easier. As it happened in its day with the applications of mobile banks.
On the other hand, miDGT will also serve to give drivers information about special road safety campaigns that, of course, will be of great help in cars with Android Auto or Apple CarPlay, since they will be able to receive the information immediately if the driver is in the car.
Can we leave the physical driving license at home?
The DGT has confirmed that the digital version of the driving license will be as valid at the legal level as the physical license, so the answer is: yes. Although we must ensure that we have the phone with a battery to show it to the corresponding agent in case of need.
So that the authorities can quickly contrast the digital card with its database, it will be accompanied by a QR code, which can be read directly by the agent and thus have all the information it requires in a few seconds.
As it could not be otherwise, detractors of this application have already come out, but there is nothing to fear. We all know that the phones are capable of reporting on the location and, what is most worrying, on the speed at which it circulates, but the DGT has guaranteed that the application will not have any type of link with that data and will be 100% anonymous.
In addition, with that of carrying the driving license on the mobile, we can save ourselves a fine for not carrying it with us physically. As of today, the fine is 60 euros, the same as if we do not carry the registration certificate or the vehicle’s technical sheet in the car, the three elements that must be carried whenever we take the car, along with the current ITV.
In short, the DGT has taken a step forward to modernize and make life a little easier for us. With the application, they will save us the long lines in Traffic or some fine for misguidance.
For all this, we will surely get used to it quickly, as it happened in its day when it was no longer mandatory to carry the paid receipt of the vehicle insurance and the same agents were in charge of contrasting the data through the registration.
