Psychonauts 2 is out today as one of the experiences of the year and the best Double Fine game, but the team is not resting on its laurels and you are already thinking about your next project. At the moment there is nothing to announce, it is time to focus on Raz and the psychonauts, but Tim Schaffer anticipates that it will be something completely new.
“All this has been to somehow look back on comfortable things,” says Schaffer in an interview with GamesIndustry. And it has been gratifying. I really enjoyed doing those remasters, I loved making an adventure game, and I loved making Psychonauts 2. But I think the team and I are really excited to do something completely new that will completely wow people. “
The creative veteran acknowledges that focusing on doing such different things can be risky, but in the end it’s Double Fine’s cover letter. “I think it often seems like a risky move, to do something creative and original, but in the end I think it’s the safest thing for us because it’s an area where we can really excel“Says Schaffer. “It takes a lot of commitment to do something really original given all the financial pressures in a studio, but it was more of a long-term goal. Like, ‘if we just make creative and unique titles that we’re passionate about, eventually it will be clear that our titles are worth playing‘. “
As to Xbox Game Pass, Schaffer considers service a great ally so that Double Fine’s proposals reach a greater number of players faster, something important for games as peculiar as those of the team. “I think it’s really cool for Double Fine, where we want to do something new, original and amazing, which means there could be a higher barrier to entry for players who don’t know what this is. And to lower that barrier financially where it’s not about buying a $ 70 game over another and it’s more about the time it takes to download them because they’re all there on Game Pass, I think it’s a great way for Double Fine games to find your audience faster«.
