One of the great attractions of the chain coppel, are the payment facilities offered to customers to buy in their stores. From credit, paying in installments and months without interest, to direct loans to get out of trouble. However, many stop paying the debt for various reasons and the Mexican company must take action to collect the outstanding balance and interest.
Coppel’s collection strategy has become a benchmark for countless memes, as it stands out for its persistence, tenacity and ability to find debtors at any time and anywhere. Maybe that’s why it wouldn’t sound so far-fetched that they were now being tracked with a GPS locator.
Do they seriously put GPS bracelets on Coppel debtors?
Recently, TikTok user @_medicenelchino He published a video where it is observed that he is wearing a white bracelet with the name and logo of Coppel’.
“Wow, those from Coppel are putting a location on the debtors!” Warns the Internet user in the title.
“The people from Coppel have already put a pager on me so that when they come to charge me, don’t tell them that I’m not here,” he said in the clip. The video quickly went viral and so far it exceeds 3 million views and adds almost 200 thousand likes.

Many took the information as true, unleashing great controversy and concern, especially among the defaulters who owe the company from Culiacán, Sinaloa.
Nevertheless, other users did not fall for the joke. The most observant were quick to point out that Coppel’s alleged “locator” is nothing more than a bracelet with LED lights. Yes, the kind that they give away or sell at parties and concerts to liven up the atmosphere.
This specific bracelet is one of many that was given during an event where Coppel was one of the main collaborators. Those attending the inauguration of the Christmas tree at the Venustiano Carraza (CDMX) mayor’s office received the accessory, he explains Radio Formula.
What measures can companies take to collect debts?
For the peace of mind of many, neither Coppel nor any other department store, company or credit institution is allowed to place tracking devices on their customers under any circumstances.
What they can do is contact you to request or negotiate the payment of the debt. If you do not reach an agreement and if you do not make a payment for three months, your debt is registered in the Credit Bureau and goes to the collection offices. They will take care of looking for you by all possible means, from constant calls and notifications, to visits at your home or workplace.
Remember that, according to Article 17 of the Constitution, no one can be sent to prison for debts of a purely civil nature, such as these cases. However, the collection office can seize the assets that are in the name of the defaulter to cover the outstanding debt.
