Although Coca-Cola has been consumed as a remedy for many stomach ailments, there are those who report that it can cause constipation.
The gas does not constipate
When it comes to an upset stomach, many people turn to a cup of non-carbonated soda as if it were a doctor-prescribed remedy. The quick and popular remedy, usually in the form of cola, ginger ale or clear soft drinks, is said to help calm the stomach with its mild fizz and replenish fluids and glucose lost through vomiting and diarrhoea.
Gas does not cause constipation problems; in fact, carbonated water has benefits for digestion. Not only can it improve swallowing, but it also increases the feeling of fullness and reduces constipation. As constipation is related to dehydration in the colon, we must make sure to drink plenty of water. When the body is properly hydrated, less water will be drawn from the colon. This will keep stools soft and easy to pass.
Caffeine can cause constipation
But although gas does not constipate, Coca-Cola contains some ingredients that do favor this intestinal problem. Liquids that contain caffeine, such as coffee and soft drinks, can dehydrate us and make constipation worse. This is why excess caffeine and metabolic syndrome (which is associated with both excess sugar and excess sugar substitutes) are associated with constipation.
So the Coca-Cola that contains caffeine and sugar (or sweetener), it does increase the risk of constipation. This suggests that non-carbonated energy drinks (containing both ingredients) can also cause constipation. It might not cause constipation if Coca-Cola Zero Zero is taken, but there are no studies to confirm this.
Drinking this soft drink as a substitute for water is not recommended. It’s important to note that some fluids can increase the risk of dehydration and worsen constipation in some people. For example, those who are prone to constipation should limit their intake of caffeinated soft drinks, coffee, and alcohol. And, of course, it is not advised to exclusively drink this type of soft drink on a daily basis.
Still, in Athens they have discovered that Coca-Cola could effectively eliminate painful stomach blockages at low cost. That is why popular belief recommends this drink when we have an upset stomach. However, we recommend seeing a doctor and not drinking sugary drinks or drinks sweetened with artificial sweeteners.
