- IMSS currently has a health team made up of 146,000 male and female nurses and more than 84,000 male and female physicians.
- All workers must attend to just over 70 million beneficiaries
- Due to this scenario, it has become “normal” to have to attend to more than 20 patients per day through short consultations.
One of the biggest dreams that health professionals have is to get a stable source of work. In this way they guarantee a fixed income each month and at least to some extent have their future resolved. The problem is that not everything is favorable and sometimes it can turn into a nightmare. The best example is a doctor who did not have a satisfactory experience at the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS) and preferred to step aside.
History of a highly relevant institution
The origin of the country’s public health column goes back to the January 19, 1943 when the IMSS was created by President Manuel Ávila Camacho. The primary objective was to guarantee workers’ comprehensive access to development.
Since then it has continued to grow and now has just over 70 million beneficiaries. Although one of the problems is that the increase in the number of workers has not been equivalent.
How many workers does IMSS have?
With this in mind, it currently has a health team made up of 146,000 nurses and more than 84,000 doctors. On a typical day in the IMSS Ordinary Regime, 404 thousand 118 consultations are granted, of which 303 thousand 469 are for Family Medicine, 54 thousand 335 for Specialties, 9 thousand 938 for dental and 36 thousand 916 for Emergencies.
In addition, an average of 832 births, 2,852 surgeries, 710,350 clinical tests, 50,768 Radiodiagnosis studies, 11,338 Echosonography, 6,668 Tomography, 237 Cardiopulmonary Physiology and 901 Magnetic Resonance are attended. In addition, 15 thousand 401 sessions of Inhalotherapy, thousand 844 of Radiotherapy, 7 thousand 529 of Hemodialysis, 21 thousand 215 of Physical Medicine and thousand 48 of Nuclear Medicine, among others.
For its part, one of the main complaints of health professionals and patients is that time is never enough. For this reason, there are more and more frequent express inquiries. It is an alternative to serve as many people as possible per day.
An often repeated story
The former led to an IMSS doctor to make a drastic decision. Through its social networks Dr Ilsewho has a specialty in Internal Medicine, pointed out the contradiction that thousands of workers in that institution must face.
On the one hand, they are required to offer a service with empathy and humanitarian attention. The problem is that many times it is impossible to do it when you have to meet 20 or 30 patients in a work day.
Friends about 2 weeks ago I resigned from the institution
As empathetic as I want to be
No matter how good a human being I try to be (I’m not perfect, nobody is)
There is no way that in 15 minutes, with 20 to 30 patients a day and without supplies, good treatment can be maintained

All of the above translates into consultations of a maximum duration of 15 minutes. While another adversity is that many times they do not even have enough basic supplies to carry out their work.
Due to this scenario, the doctor resigned her position at the IMSS. Although it is the dream of thousands of people, in the end, their own health and personal satisfaction are more important. Otherwise, a vicious circle is generated in which everyone is harmed.
