According to the Secretariat of the Environment of Mexico City (Sedema) reported through the Zero Waste Action Plan, that Mexico City generates an average of 13 thousand 149 tons of waste per day, for which they seek to generate changes in consumption habits, promote the installation of recycling plants, increase the production of compost and dignifying the work of the cleaning workers, it will be possible to reduce the generation of waste and maximize its use.

However, for those who are unwilling to keep the city and the whole country clean by littering the streets, there is a penalty.

How much is the fine for littering in CDMX?

In article 29, the CDMX General Civic Culture Law indicates that littering in unauthorized environments is an infraction against the urban environment.

So you can report who litters

If you notice a person littering the street, you can report it in the following way:

    • You can go to the nearest Civic Court and present your complaint orally or in writing. They will ask you for your official identification.
    • You can send an email to [email protected] with: your name, address, telephone or mail; indicate the date and place of the events, describe what happened, and add evidence (photos, videos).
    • Go in person to the Oficialía de Partes de la Procuraduría Ambiental y del Ordenamiento Territorial (PAOT) located in the Cuauhtémoc mayor’s office from Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

If you see a person who is already accumulating a lot of garbage on public roads, you can report it to the PAOT through its website or contact the number 55 52 65 07 80 extension 15400 or 15410.

It is better not to risk a fine and put your garbage away until you can find one of the spaces dedicated to dumping waste in Mexico City or raise your voice if you see others doing it.
