At COP26, nations must decide how they will carry out the goals set out in the 2015 Paris Agreement, as well as outline clear and specific strategies for the next decade, committing to reduce as much and as soon as possible. This meeting will discuss everything that has been achieved -and what has not- since the implementation of the initial commitments in 2015 (date of the Paris Agreement).
In the same way, it will talk about how to collaborate to develop strategies where nations adapt to the effects of climate change, and promote climate finance to reduce emissions and develop more environmentally friendly energy production methods.
COP26 will be an opportunity for countries to discuss problems, strategies and progress on commitments. However, Mexico will show many areas of opportunity in terms of its climate agenda. The country lacks ambition in international commitments to reduce greenhouse gas emissions (through nationally determined contributions).
At the end of 2020, Mexico did not announce new or more ambitious goals, but rather reaffirmed those it established 5 years ago, that is, reducing 22% of greenhouse gases and 51% of black carbon. Additionally, the extinction of the Climate Change Fund and the reduction of the budget for this issue show their lack of commitment to the climate agenda.
