Artificial intelligence (AI) invades us! Now we can say it. After the boom with the ChatGPTthe new GPT-4and the thousands of uses we have given it, now a company replaces its CEO with an AI, and the positive results surprise everyone.
It is the Chinese video game company netdragon websoft, who made the controversial decision to name an AI bot as their chief executive officer or CEO. The humanoid robot, named Tangyu, powered by artificial intelligence took office in August 2022, becoming the first of its kind.
The first CEO by an AI
According to insiders, when the change was announced, the bot would increase efficiency for key decision making and risk management for the Chinese company. In addition to “ensure a fair and efficient workplace for all employees”.
Even so, many of us wonder how a robot can make decisions. The company explains that its operation is based on an operating system “that gradually learns each time it makes a decision and evaluates its performance.” In addition, they jokingly comment that unlike a human “he does not fight with people or complain for hours.”
On the other hand, the algorithm on which it is based was developed by the company iFlytekwhich specializes in speech recognition technology and natural language processing.
How did they measure the results?
In less than eight months since it started, NetDragon shares have outperformed the Hang Seng Index, which tracks the largest companies listed in Hong Kong, according to The Hustle. That is, the shares rose 10%, according to google finance and its value is about 1,100 thousand US dollars.
“We believe that AI is the future of corporate governance, and our appointment of Ms. Tang Yu represents our commitment to truly embrace the use of AI to transform the way we operate our business and ultimately drive our future strategic growth,” NetDragon Chairman Dejian Liu said in a press release.
“We will continue to expand our algorithms behind Tang Yu to build an open, interactive, and highly transparent management model as we gradually transform into a metaverse-based working community.”
From technology to reality, the great debate
It all sounds very nice and novel, however, this milestone in business history leaves the doubt that has plagued us for several years: can artificial intelligence really replace flesh and blood people in their jobs?
According to the signature McKinsey & CompanyThis is a phenomenon that is advancing and having an impact on the economy. So, automation only in Mexico, it would modify around 25.5 million existing jobs, which represents 52% of all professions.
In the case of the United States, it is about 45 million workers, approximately 28% of the entire labor force, would lose their job in 2030.
Globally, the five jobs that will be primarily affected would be:
- drivers
- Bank tellers and account managers
- Lawyers
- car dealers
- Call center executives
Of course, now we can add the CEO of a company to the list. Although interestingly these are precisely what make these cost reductions possible, with AI, but they are not safe from being replaced either.
The prediction that came true
In 2017, Jack Ma, the founder of Alibaba, predicted that “a robot will probably be on the cover of Time magazine as the best CEO in 30 years,” according to information from CNN.
NetDragon, founded in 1999, developed various games, including Eudemons Online, “Heroes Evolved” and “Conquer Online”as well as China’s first online gaming portal, 17173.com.
So what to do to not be replaced by an AI?
The key is to acquire other knowledge that, no matter how hard they try, an AI can never have: soft skills. Here we tell you more in depth about the subject. However, we want to make it clear that even if the outlook looks a bit cloudy, there is always something we can do about it.
