Tegucigalpa, Oct 14 (EFE) .- The career of Uruguayan Fabián Coito as coach of Honduras to seek qualification for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, came to an end this Thursday with the bitterness of not having won a game out of six disputed in the Concacaf tie and the disappointment of Honduran fans.
Following Wednesday’s 2-0 home loss to Jamaica, Honduras slumped in last place in the Concacaf tie.
The separation of Coito as helmsman of Honduras began to appear after the 4-1 loss suffered at home against the United States, after two draws on the road against Canada (1-1) and El Salvador (0-0), and one more at home, against Costa Rica (0-0). Added to that was the away defeat against Mexico (3-0), before the one suffered against Jamaica (2-0).
The balance in six games was disastrous for Honduras, which only added three points, a balance of three draws and three defeats, in which they scored two goals and received ten.
Coito assumed the technical direction of Honduras on February 21, 2019 in an environment of great expectations and hopes of the Central American country, which seeks to qualify for a fourth world championship, after participating in those of Spain 1982, South Africa 2010 and Brazil 2014.
The one in Spain in 1982, the only one in which it did so with good success, Honduras qualified with the recently deceased national coach José de la Paz Herrera, while South Africa 2010 with the Colombian Reynaldo Rueda, and Brazil 2014, with the also Colombian Luis Fernando Suárez.
With Coito on the bench since 2019, Honduras played 29 games, including the six of the qualifying round for the Qatar 2022 World Cup, of which they won eight, drew ten and lost eleven.
The South American coach, who when he arrived in Honduras on February 21, 2019, was already known for his time as a player for Olimpia, from Tegucigalpa, at the end of the last century, dodged many difficulties with the selection of the Central American country, including the forced break due to the covid-19 pandemic, which began to spread in March 2020.
The two defeats at the Estadio Olímpico Metropolitano, in San Pedro Sula, in northern Honduras, against the United States and Jamaica, and the draw against Costa Rica, led the Honduras Football Federation to decide today to separate Coito and his body. technical.
The Federation has not reported on who will succeed Coito on the Honduran bench, which has been complicated in the tie due to the poor results obtained.
Coito was presented in 2019 in Tegucigalpa as the new coach of Honduras, in a ceremony in which the South American professional said that it represented “a great responsibility” for him and his work group.
“It is a pleasure after 25 years to return to a country that I know, to a city that I know. It is really gratifying for anyone, for a football coach in particular, that a federation entrusts him with neither more nor less the responsibility of directing their national team, “said Coito, then.
He also said that directing a team also implies “challenges, which is what we like to face”, and that when faced with a challenge one “prepares, overcomes it”, and that “is really gratifying and is the best satisfaction that we have. you can leave”.
In addition, an excited Coito expressed that the experience of leading a team in search of qualification for a World Cup, must be accompanied by football managers, fans, press, coaches and “especially with footballers”, with whom can form, together “with the coaches”, a team with which people “feel identified”.
The team that made up Coito, improvising many times, mainly in the last three games of the tie, could not identify with the Honduran fans who, with the first bad results at home, began to chant “Coito Out.”
A sector of the sports press also lashed out hard against Coito, who when he arrived in Honduras promised “work, dedication and commitment to reach that desired world,” of Qatar 2022.
The 53-year-old former U20 coach from Uruguay came to the Honduran bench assisted by his compatriots Miguel Falero and Sebastián Urrutia de Freitas, and the Honduran Carlos Ramón Tábora.
Before Coito’s arrival in Honduras, the Football Federation in Tegucigalpa indicated that he was hired after “an exhaustive process of analysis and review” of coaches’ resumes to direct “the Qatar 2022 World Cup process.”
Three days before traveling from Montevideo to Tegucigalpa to coach Honduras, the Uruguayan Football Association (AUF) said goodbye to Coito with a warm tribute in recognition of his twelve-year process leading different youth teams from the South American country.
