- According to the WHO, one in 10 medicines sold on the planet are counterfeit or illegal.
- These types of practices not only represent a crime but also expose the integrity of patients.
- Within the alert for counterfeit medicines published by Cofepris appears an antifungal that was stopped manufacturing in 2014.
The Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) published an alert for the counterfeiting of two medicines. With this information, the population, health personnel, distributors and pharmacy workers are asked to identify any of the drugs. Their commercialization not only represents a crime but also endangers the integrity of those who ingest them.
Unfortunately, the illegal creation of drugs and the theft of supplies have become quite common around the planet. According to the World Health Organization (WHO) it is estimated that 10 percent of medicines sold globally are apocryphal. The most affected are low- and middle-income countries, although in general it is a crime that occurs in most nations.
Beyond the losses that this illegal practice produces for pharmaceutical companies is the well-being of patients. In fact, the consumption of counterfeit medicines causes between 300,000 and one million deaths each year worldwide.
