One year after the publication of the presidential decree that prohibits the circulation and commercialization of vaperselectronic cigarettes and other similar devices, the Federal Commission for the Protection against Sanitary Risks (Cofepris) published the results of its actions in favor of the health of the population.
Historic vaping seizure
The health authority maintains constant vigilance in the country to identify and sanction establishments and vending machines that sell vapers and the like. What has generated the insurance of more than 121 thousand pieces of these products during the last year.
In coordinated work with the areas of Protection against Sanitary Risks of the federal entities, 3,740 verification visits have been made in national territory, resulting in the execution of 183 suspensions.
The complaints presented by the population have been a useful mechanism for the involvement of society, which has joined in pointing out facts, acts or omissions that represent a risk or damage to health. To date there are a total of 1,200, of which 774 are related to sales reports and 426 to advertising of this type of device.
Cofepris identified all the harmful substances from vapers
As part of the work to inform and raise awareness among the population, in October 2022 it was disclosed that the scientists and doctors from Cofepris developed in the National Reference Laboratory. It was the first and innovative study to know the content of vaperswhich revealed that they contain more than 30 substances not declared on the packaging, which are highly harmful when inhaled.
In connection with educational institutions, the campaign “Check the vape” is promoted, aimed at girls, boys and adolescents, who through teaching materials they are presented with the chromatographic study that shows that vapers contain linalool, used in insecticides; benzyl alcohol, used in soaps, creams, and cleaning products; and dimethyl ether, a highly flammable substance, to name a few. This is in addition to the damage to the environment and the deception in advertising that promotes them as an alternative to quit smoking.
The protection of the health of all is one of the main premises of the Government of Mexico, which is why in December 2022 the new Regulation of the General Law for Tobacco Control (RLGCT) in which the spaces are one hundred percent free of smoke and emissions.
In view of this, this authority prepared the Graphic identity and signage manual for spaces that are 100% free of tobacco smoke and emissions. Today, throughout the national territory, in schools, offices and public places of concurrence, there are signs that frame spaces that are one hundred percent free of tobacco smoke and emissions, which favors the protection of the health of those people who do not smoke and/or vape
This health authority will continue to carry out actions that protect the health of the population, and invites the population to continue denouncing those establishments that fail to comply with current regulations when marketing vapers, electronic cigarettes and similar devices, as well as those in which they are not respected. the spaces are one hundred percent free of smoke and emissions.
