The British subsidiary of Coca-Cola (CCGB) has announced this week the launch of the first plastic bottles with cap attached to it, thus beginning the gradual transition of the entire production of PET bottles towards this new design, in order to reduce plastic waste and facilitate recycling.
These bonded caps have begun to be produced in the factory that the company has in Scotland to put the bottles into circulation this month in the British country, to soon extend them to the rest of the territories of Great Britain. Working in collaboration with Coca-Cola Europacific Partners, the company also anticipates that they hope to apply the same cap design attached to all european production.
Coca-Cola affirms with this launch its commitment to the movement World Without Waste“a world without waste”, and the circular economy, although in reality it responds more to the European Union guidelines on sustainability to reduce plastics. Among the measures adopted by the EU in 2019, when the ban on single-use plastics was approved, included indications to adapt the designs of PET bottles and containers.
Thus, companies must adapt products so that all caps and closures remain attached to the original container during use and consumption, and must do so before July 2024. It is a complex change at the level of industrial design, since companies must not only comply with regulations, but also offer viable alternatives with their business model that are attractive and comfortable for the consumer.
Already last summer, Coca-Cola Spain launched a very limited edition of bottles with this type of stopper, a small pilot test to test its response and viability. But now it is the British subsidiary that has taken a firm step towards the transition with a design that they believe to be the definitive one and the perfect solution to the problem.
One of the added problems that PET bottles have is that, no matter how much they are 100% recyclable and/or made with recycled materials, plugs are often lost, they fall or are thrown on the ground or end up in the regular garbage, thus generating more waste. In this way, the closure is always attached to the container while the consumer consumes or uses the bottle, being able to easily recycle everything at the same time.

These new bottles will be applied to the full range of soft drinks of the brand in Scotland, which in the British country includes, in addition to the Coca-Cola line (Original Taste, zerosugar, Diet Coke), popular drinks like Fanta, Sprite, Dr Pepper or Lilt. We assume that it will not take long for them to be definitively implemented in our country as well, and we will see similar movements in other companies as well.
