There are many reasons why a person would want to change their name and/or surname. The reasons can be simple taste, ideology, sex change, religious conversions, among others. Although it is a procedure that almost any Mexican can do, for many it remains a mystery how to do it. Here we tell you what you need.
Change of own name
Name changes can be made for the following reasons:
- When the interested party requests it because he uses a different name from the one registered, either due to a change of nationality, marriage or another just reason.
- When the name has been imposed with infringement or is offensive.
- If it is the translation or transliteration of a foreign name.
- Gender change.
However, if what you want is to change your name for an irrelevant reason, it is very likely that the process will be denied. An example of this would be the change of a letter that does not change the meaning or pronunciation (eg Esther for Ester).
The name change cannot be made by third parties, except in the case of a minor or person under guardianship.
To start the process, a name change registration must be made in the Civil Registry where the birth registration is recorded.
