The name of CD Projekt Red It has weight in the video game industry, or rather it did at some point. As the studio behind the phenomenally beloved The Witcher series, the company’s reputation has sadly slipped since it released Cyberpunk 2077 in late 2020, which has gone on to be one of the most disastrous video game releases in recent history.
Other than that, the developer is still going strong, and to celebrate the fact that it’s been in business since 2002, CDPR is offering discounts on its game catalogue. Well, in a recent post, CD Projekt Red has said that starting next week all of its games will be on sale at reduced prices to commemorate 20 years in business.
Although the company was technically founded in 1994, it started out as a way to import PC games into Poland, which did not have a prominent gaming scene back then. It wasn’t until 2002 that founders Marcin Iwiński and Michał Kiciński created a development department, and the team set out to make an adaptation of Andrzej Sapkowski’s fantasy books, which would become 2007’s The Witcher.
It is this series that gave CDPR its reputation over the years, with Cyberpunk being a starting point for Geralt of Rivia’s antics. The studio recently announced that a new Witcher game is in the works, though there is no release date yet.
This new installment of the saga will also represent something different for the company, since it is being developed in Unreal Engine 5. One can only speculate if this is to distance itself from the barrage of bugs that Cyberpunk left behind.
Although the reputation of CD Projekt Red has dropped in the last two years, the developer seems willing to move on, returning to the series that helped it win all the initial praise. Cyberpunk 2077 may well be a rock for the Polish studio for some time, but progress has been made on the open-world sci-fi game, with many considering the game to be in a more playable state today.
