If we suffer from bruxism, we must avoid triggers, such as the consumption of certain medications, drugs, alcohol or tobacco.
Bruxism consists of clenching the teeth or making them grind involuntarily, this situation can occur in people asleep or also when they are awake. Although the exact cause of this disorder is not known, stress and anxiety play an important role in this problem, and maybe its main triggers.
Likewise, there is a certain possibility that the consumption of certain medications, drugs, alcohol, tobacco, among others, may also contribute to suffering from bruxism.
What are its consequences?
In the long run this situation of “clenching or grinding” the teeth can cause:
- Temporomandibular joint problems
- The muscles in that area become inflamed
- Premature wear of teeth
- Dental fractures
- Headaches and ears
- Sleep disorders
- Tooth enamel loss
- Excessive sensitivity in the teeth
- Hypertrophy of the chewing muscles (masseters).
Are there treatments? Which are?
You can resort to the use of mouth protectors (splints) that protect the teeth from the pressure exerted by pressing or grinding them, in addition to relaxing massages of the muscles of the face, especially the area of the jaw, neck and shoulders.
Of course, as a prevention, we must avoid triggers, in this case, anxiety and stress.
Natural remedies to avoid bruxism
Certain infusions can be used that could help us since they have relaxing and calming properties, to eliminate tension and nervousness (although their use in bruxism has not been proven).
Chamomile
Consume infusion of a tablespoon of dried chamomile flowers. Drink a cup before going to sleep. Avoid using it during pregnancy.
Valerian
Infusion of about 15 grams of the root of the plant, which is left to rest overnight. Avoid consumption in pregnancy, lactation and young children.
Balm
Infusion of a pinch of dried leaves in a glass of water for a quarter of an hour. Drink three glasses a day.
Relaxing baths
Thyme
You can take a relaxing bath by adding a good portion of thyme flower tea to your bathwater.
Sage
Infuse three tablespoons of the dried plant for one liter of water. Add to the bathwater.
These relaxing baths can be done from 15 to 20 minutes.
Heat application
Soak a towel in hot water, make sure the temperature is comfortable, remove excess water and place it on both sides of the face. This may help to relax stressed muscles.
