A new tax has been approved in Spain that will have a direct impact on the price of cars. From September 1, 2022, refrigeration devices, including air conditioners, will be up to 10% more expensive, which will have a direct impact on the price of new cars.
The automotive sector is facing numerous challenges. These are turbulent times for buying a car. The escalation of prices does not help and the latest measure taken by the Congress of Deputies, instead of trying to alleviate this situation, will aggravate the problem. The new tax that has been approved in Spain will make new cars more expensive (even more).
from the next On September 1, 2022, air conditioners, freezers and refrigeration equipment in general will be up to 10% more expensive. A direct consequence of Law 14/2022 approved on July 8 in the Congress of Deputies. This law hides a reform of the tax on fluorinated gases that, although it already existed, only affected those who sold these gases directly to the final consumer.
The new tax that will affect the price of cars
After the change introduced the price of refrigeration and air conditioning equipment will increase between 5 and 10%, since all the sectors that have some relationship with these gases will come into play, regardless of their function. That is why it will be applied in the manufacture and import of new equipment and refrigeration systems, air conditioning, heat pumps and appliances, until now exempt.
The automotive industry is among the affected sectors. To date, some 20 business associations have submitted allegations to the draft bill and affirm that its entry into force “will affect different sectors of the economy, but also households or small businesses.”
Not only air conditioning is in the spotlight. The heat pump has become a key component in the rise of sustainable mobility and, more specifically, of the electric car. Therefore, we find ourselves before a new stone on the road that will slow down the massification of the 100% electric car.
Fines for failing to comply with the new tax on fluorinated gases
As for the fines for non-compliance of “the obligation to register in the Territorial Register of the Tax on Fluorinated Greenhouse Gases provided for in numbers 3 and 5 of section sixteen” can amount to up to €1,500. In the event of the existence of “differences in less than the gases subject to the tax in the manufacturers”, the fine will be 100% of the amount of the quota that would have corresponded to said gases.
