One of the weak flanks of electric cars is the low availability of spaces for recharging energy. Carrefour is working in this business segment, and the decision is to move forward immediately.
The brand of French origin hopes that the parking spaces of its hypermarkets and supermarkets will become gigantic places of refueling and, in this way, attract more customers to its sales surfaces.
The idea is that while they recharge their cars, consumers buy products in their retail.
Carrefour confirmed this Wednesday March 30 in Paris that it will install at least 710 charging stations for electric vehicles and 5,100 charging points in its French hypermarkets and in Carrefour Market supermarkets.
The goal is to reach that figure in 2025.
Carrefour, retail and electric cars
Carrefour’s idea is not new, with retailers around the world, such as Starbucks, looking at powering cars as an additional service to attract consumers while optimizing their green credentials.
From the first week of April, the first Carrefour with charging points for electric cars will be enabled. It is located in the parking lot of the La Chapelle Saint Luc hypermarket, in Troyes, northern France.
The measure is very well seen by the governments of Europe, which are conditioned to comply with the electrification standards but who see recharging options as an obstacle if they are not overcrowded.
Europe is expected to have at least 125 million electric vehicles by 2035, according to research by EY and Eurelectric called “Power sector accelerating e-mobility”.
The same study says that the European Union needs 70 million EV chargers (9.1 million public and 57.5 in homes) to be able to support the exponential increase in electric cars.
Today, electric cars do not exceed 3.25 million on the streets of major European cities, according to Reuters.
