The Mexican Carlos Slimwho is currently the eighth richest person in the world according to the billionaires list of Forbesis selling the luxurious mansion he owns in the heart of Manhattan, New York.
The impressive property is offered through the StreetEasy site for a “modest” price of 80 million dollars. That is, little more than 1,500 million Mexican pesos at the current exchange rate (19 pesos per dollar on average).
It is not the first time that he tries to sell it
The 82-year-old tycoon bought the mansion in 2010 for almost 45 million dollars to the Russian businessman tamir sapir. In 2015, the Mexican put it back on the real estate market, but there was no buyer and he decided to keep it, until now.
It is not known for certain if Carlos Slim inhabited the property at any time. However, there have been versions indicating that paranormal events occur in the placereason why the owner of Carso Group I would not have been able to occupy it or sell it.
Beyond that, there are more material obstacles holding back the sale: money, of course.
To buy the house you need a $16 million down paymentaccording to breakdown Bloomberg. The rest can be financed with a 30 year mortgagewith $400,000 monthly payments (about 7.6 million pesos per month). In addition, the monthly property taxes amount to $23,000 (437,000 Mexican pesos).
With a fortune of 92.6 billion dollars, according to the real-time ranking of Forbes, Carlos Slim is one of the few who can afford to own (and maintain) a property like that. In fact, according to the most recent calculations, the billionaire can earn that $80 million in just two days.
This is “the most expensive property in New York” that Carlos Slim sells
known as ‘Benjamin N. Duke House’the huge mansion is at number 1009 5th Avenueversus center park and the Metropolitan Museum of Art (MET). It is listed as New York City Landmarksince it is an authentic masterpiece of architecture with more than 100 years of life, describes a report of The New York Post.
The original property was built between 1899 and 1901 to Benjamin N. DukePresident of American Tobacco Company. However, in the advertisement they indicate that it was built in 1931, the year of its last major remodeling. It is the work of the firm Welch, Smith & Provot, who is in charge of the design and construction in the style of an “Italian Renaissance palazzo with strong Beaux Arts elements”, according to the real estate portal.
The building measures 20,000 square feet of extension (about 1,858 square meters), has 25 rooms distributed in seven floors and a basement. These include 8 luxury bedrooms, 10 bathrooms and multiple common and private areas.
If it sells for the amount Carlos Slim asks for, it would set a new record: the most expensive old house ever sold in the Big Apple real estate market. The current mark corresponds to a sale made in 2021 by Vincent Viola, for an amount of 59 million dollars.
