New car sales in Europe closed the month of September 2021 with 964,800 units sold. A volume that represents a significant drop of 25% compared to the same period of the previous year. In the midst of the collapse of the European market, the Tesla Model 3 has made history by becoming the best-selling car.
The European car market exacerbates its decline. In the month of September 2021 the car sales in Europe have counted a total of 964,800 units. A volume of units enrolled that, if compared with that obtained during the same period of the previous year, translates into a significant 25% retracement.
Distributors continue to face availability problems caused by semiconductor shortages. The waiting list to receive a new car has exploded and, what is equally relevant, we must take into account the economic uncertainty derived from the coronavirus pandemic.
Despite these poor results that have been reaping, the accumulated data continues to be positive. In the period between the months of January and September, new car registrations in Europe reached 9,059,475 units, 7% more compared to 2020.
The electric car continues its unstoppable rise
Electric cars and plug-in hybrids have once again prevented the general decline of the European market. European drivers continue to take advantage of available incentives and subsidies to make the leap to electric mobility. Quite the opposite of what happens with diesel cars, to whose negative trend we must add the aforementioned microchip crisis.
The Diesel-powered car sales totaled 167,000 units, a huge 51% drop. In September, low-emission vehicles registered a monthly growth of 44%, reaching 221,500 units. Before the coronavirus pandemic, 10.3 new diesel cars were marketed for every electric / plug-in hybrid. Now, this proportion has been reduced to just 1.3, which highlights the trend changes that have occurred in a short space of time.
Throughout the ninth month of 2021 46.5% of passenger cars registered in Europe were SUV type vehicles. This is the highest monthly market share in the segment. SUVs remain an essential part and protagonist of the “locomotive” that drives new car registrations in the Old Continent. The Volkswagen Group, Stellantis and Hyundai-KIA, are the main players in the SUV market.
