The mayoress of Cancun, Mexico)Ana Patricia Peralta, values the urban reforms promoted by the central and local government that will culminate in the coming months, the improvements in the international airport and its accesses, and the increase in interconnection with initiatives such as the mayan train or the new national airline, which will increase the arrival of the number of tourists, already at historical records.
In an interview with EFE, Peralta applauds the commitment of international hotel groups to the city and the region and considers that this year will be “historic” from the tourist point of view after breaking records of arrivals at the airport of cancun (30.3 million in 2022) and the execution of the aforementioned projects.
The mayoress is in Madrid to promote at the Fitur International Tourism Fair the offer of a city with 43,109 rooms in 207 hotels, with 50 beaches with quality marks and which has the Mexican international airport “with four terminals and a leader in tourist arrivals international countries”, “especially from the US, Canada and European countries such as England, Germany, France and Spain”.
His delegation also includes the governor of the state of Quintana Roo, Mara Lezama, and other municipal officials in an action that includes the signing, this Friday, of a Letter of Intent to collaborate with the Madrid Chamber of Commerce so that it has representation in the city, an initiative “unique in Latin America that is carried out with the intention of attracting Spanish investment in Cancun and that Spanish citizens and tourists have a space to turn to if they need it in addition to the existing consulates.”
This action is also part of the efforts to resume the levels of European tourists lost in recent years, despite the fact that they currently still represent 30% of the total, and that the Old Continent chains continue to bet on the region and open new hotels, he stresses.

In addition, Peralta considers that some actions announced by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, such as the start of operations of the new Mexican public airline, will increase the economic and tourist development of the region, increasing the role of Cancun as a “multi-destination hub”, with 127 international air routes, as well as the connection with the Mayan Train “which with 2,500 kilometers of travel will connect the entire Yucatan peninsula” and will travel through 5 states of the republic, he adds.
Regarding the controversy that the idea of creating a public airline that would also manage some airports has aroused in some sectors, Peralta stresses that “always, in the face of transformative projects and with economic repercussions, there can be resistance to the projects”, but “the president has bet on the economic growth of the southeast”.
In this sense, “coordinated actions are carried out with the central government” in “the largest investment since the founding of our state” that includes works at the airport exit, Colosio Boulevard and the Nichupté Bridge, between the hotel zone and downtown of the city, “works that seemed like a dream for many legislatures and will be finished this year.”
Peralta also considers that Cancun “is a safe area” in which different administrations and organizations work in coordination on a daily basis to ensure it. “From the specialized tourist police, to the police forces of the federal state, the municipalities, the National Guard, the Sedena, the Navy, etc.”
