What is neuroblastoma?
According to the Mayo Clinic, neuroblastoma is a cancer that originates from immature nerve cells found in various areas of the body. Its occurrence is most common in and around the adrenal glands, which have similar origins to nerve cells and lie above the kidneys.
However, neuroblastoma can also occur in other areas of the abdomen and in the chest, neck, and near the spine, where clusters of nerve cells are present. It most often affects children under the age of 5, although on rare occasions it can appear in older children.
Treatment for neuroblastoma
According to information from MedLine Plus, treatment for neuroblastoma depends on:
- The location of the tumor
- How much and where the tumor has spread
- the age of the person
- In certain cases, surgery alone is enough. But often other therapies are required as well. Anticancer drugs (chemotherapy) may be recommended if the tumor has spread. Radiation therapy can also be used.
High-dose chemotherapy, autologous stem cell transplantation, and immunotherapy are also being used.
