How many weeks of contributions do I need to retire?
In 2020, a reform was made to the pension system that, among other things, reduced the weeks of contribution necessary to receive a pension.
In the first year of the reform, 2021, the required weeks were 750 and it was established that 25 weeks will be increased each year until reaching 1,000 weeks in 2031.
In 2023, Mexicans who want to receive a pension must accumulate 800 weeks of contributions to the Mexican Social Security Institute (IMSS).
An example of the benefits of this change is that between January 2021 and March 2023, 58,018 people retired, of which 54,240 had less than the 1,200 weeks required by the old law.
Without the reform, only 3,778 people would have retired.
Can I pay for the weeks that remain to retire?
The short answer is: Yeah!
This is Modality 10 or regime for independent workers. With this modality, you choose the salary with which you want to contribute and access the social security services, like any registered worker.
In this way, you accumulate the weeks necessary to achieve a pension.
