We love light candles at homea. Whether it is to give a touch of warmth at night while we read or while we watch our favorite series on Netflix, or to dress up a table when we invite family or friends to dinner, the truth is that Spaniards increasingly use candles at home.
This trend has been especially reinforced since the arrival of the pandemic. The desire to have warm and comfortable houses in the face of the unstable situation that surrounds us has triggered the consumption of candles. But despite this increase in the use of candles, the truth is that we don’t always turn them on and use them properly.
A few weeks ago, Decoesfera approached Ladenaca charming luxury candle shop located on Calle Conde de Aranda in Madrid, to participate in a sensory experience that combined the aromas of the candles from the Origami collection with the new Roku gin of Japanese origin.
And during the evening, in addition to exploring senses such as taste or smell, we were able to discover how we should light and use the candles correctly to extend its life, and to maximize its properties.
Among the advice he gave us Andrea Mardones, director of the commercial division of Ladenac Milano in Madrid, highlights to begin with the choice of a good quality candle, with vegetable waxes and a cotton wick, as well as a glass or porcelain container. And from here, it is important to follow a series of steps if we want to make the most of the aroma of the candles.
When turning it on, the first step is trim the wick each time you dress it. The most appropriate thing is that it does not measure more than two millimeters, and that you always leave it straight. The reason? The longer the wick, the faster the candle will burn. In addition, the shorter wick also prevents smoke from being produced.
Andrea Mardones also warned of the importance of lighting the candle for at least a couple of hours. In this way, it is important that the wax melts evenly, to prevent only the center of the candle from melting instead of the entire surface. If only the center melts, it will create a hole that will cause problems when you want to light the candle again.
When lighting the wick, it is also important to check that there are no wick bits, or other debris, on the surface of the wax. It is also not convenient to move the candle while it is burning.
When it’s time to turn it off it is important to avoid blowing on the wick (although we’re sure you’ve been blowing out candles like this for years). If you blow, you will create smoke, not to mention that you can generate splashes with the liquid wax.
So… How do we put out the candle? Then smothering the flame, either with a candle snuffer, or by covering the candle with its own lid. Also, once it’s off, it’s important not to touch the wick (since it can break), and leave it covered to prevent the candle from collecting dust. Also remember to cut the wick when you go to light it, and straighten it again if it has been crooked.
With these tips, you will undoubtedly prolong the life of the candles, also making the most of their aroma.
