Brendan Fraser, protagonist of the first version of The Mummy, is going through one of his best professional moments. After several years removed from the big screen, he is the favorite of many to win as Best Actor in the next installment of the Oscar award. his work in The Whale has allowed him to return to the spotlight, and after having starred in three very successful movies The Mummyhis career gradually fell apart.
As is often the case, Hollywood tried to revive The Mummy with Tom Cruise at the head of the cast. The new version of said story premiered in 2017 and was a tremendous disappointment both critically and at the box office. Unlike the film starring Fraser, the reboot had no sequels and killed the intended Dark Universe that I planned to start. What went wrong if the saga had already succeeded many years before?
In an interview for VarietyFraser gave his take on what went wrong with that tape from five years ago.
“It’s hard to make that movie. The ingredient we had in our Mummy, and what I didn’t see on that tape, was the fun. That was what that version lacked. It was more of a horror-focused movie. The Mummy it should be an exciting ride not a terrifying and fear filled one. I know how difficult it is to achieve it, I tried three times”.
Fraser’s opinion is pretty much in line with that of critics when the film hit theaters. Many agreed that The Mummy (2017) seemed more like a generic Tom Cruise film than an exciting or emotional story. Five years after the catastrophe, nothing is known about a new film in the saga, but Fraser would not refuse to listen to an interesting proposal to revive that universe.
“I don’t know how it could work. But it would be open if someone came in with fair treatment.”
If he won the Oscar in 2023, the actor’s popularity would be through the roof again. Therefore, it would not be unreasonable to think that the franchise could revive soon. At the end of the day, several sagas from yesteryear have returned to the big screen with very positive results.
Would you like to see a new movie The Mummy starring Brendan Fraser?
John Joseph Cruz I am one of those who always defended Robert Pattinson as Batman and can see the same movie in the cinema up to 7 times. My guilty pleasure? Low budget horror movies.
