- Brazil is considering the possibility of using blockchain technology in its elections thanks to the security that this technology provides to prevent fraud and electoral crimes.
- Since last July, the Brazilian Electoral Authority (TSE) announced that they were in the process of investigating blockchain technology and the different ways in which it could be included in the elections.
One of the aspects that stand out about digital assets is the technology in which they move, known as blockchain. One of the characteristics of this technology is the security it provides to users, since up to now it has guaranteed the non-hacking of the block systems, in which the crypto assets are stored.
Due to these levels of security, it is that blockchains have begun to be used in various areas of human activity, with the elections of any country being one of the areas most interested in using said technology, to prevent fraud and electoral crimes.
In this regard, the South American country and mother of samba, Brazil is considering the possibility of using this technology in its voting and electoral ballots.
Brazil Analyzes Use of Blockchain in Elections
The Electoral Authority of Brazil (TSE) announced last July that it was in a Investigation process about blockchain technology and the different ways it could be included in elections.
Celio Castro Wermerlinger, current infrastructure modernization coordinator for Brazilnoted that the end-to-end voting protocol, shared keys and blockchain were part of the technologies under study.
Similarly, he explained that his team is studying blockchain technology, in order to discern if it is possible to use it, to carry out a more transparent and decentralized vote.
It should be said that the research is part of the “Elections of the Future” program, which aims to find and implement more effective and economically feasible solutions that can be used in the electronic voting system in Brazil.
Vote with blockchain
Yes well blockchain technology has previously been praised for its levels of securitywhich would allow for a more transparent election day, currently does not have a wide level of popularity among the citizens of various countries, in addition to the fact that there are still various problems related to anonymity and privacy.
In addition to this, heBlockchain technology today does not have applications that are easy to access and use, so it is not a good option when implementing it in an event such as the votes, in which people of diverse age ranges attend, since it could be an impediment to carrying out a more accessible vote.
Voatz and SecureVote
The United States is a progressive country in terms of the use of blockchain in elections, so it can be taken as an example to illustrate how the adoption of the system could be in other latitudes.
In this regard, this technology has not been widely adopted, at least that suggests the various pilot tests carried out in North American territory and events in other countries.
Blockchain-based voting company Voatz is one of the forerunners in this area, thanks to its involvement in the US state of West Virginia, where its citizens were able to cast their vote via their phones. smart in 2018.
However, said pilot program was harshly criticized for the possible security problems that it had, and that therefore, would affect the final result of the vote, for which reason suspended its use in 2020.
It should be noted that the blockchain used by this electoral program takes advantage of the HyperLedger platform developed by IBM.
Italy is another country that has considered the inclusion of blockchain in its elections. In 2018, the 5-Star Movement was talking about the issue, but no actual official vote was held using this technology.
