The world of decoration is turning to bio-interior design and creating natural environments, investigating sustainable materials and products that help improve the environment. But many times, we forget that we have practical, functional and beautiful solutions that have been with us all our lives, and that not so long ago, they were despised to be replaced by plastics and others’technological innovations‘.
Now luckily, we have to look back (and also, we are delighted), to rediscover professions and materials that were used daily before, and that now, they return with strength to help us have beautiful houses, but also sustainable. That is what happens with the boxwood. A type of wood that is considered as the steel of woods, and that is used to craft spoons and other kitchen utensils by companies such as Buxus Crafts.
The benefits of boxwood
And why do we say that boxwood is like the steel of woods? Because boxwood is hard and taut, plus, it has no pore, so it is one of the most suitable for creating kitchen utensils. As they do not have pores, these utensils do not take on color, smell or taste, and they guarantee maximum hygiene.
Despite its extraordinary hardness, utensils made with this type of wood neither scratches nor spoils non-stick properties from pans, plates or containers. And it is not attacked by any insects either.
Buxus Crafts
In these times in which we all look for unique pieces at home, small artisan companies like Buxus are beginning to have their place again, and their market, among the homogenizing offer of the large decoration chains.
Behind Buxus, there is Maria Peña Andrés Farrer, a woman who after years working as a tax advisor, decided to bet decisively on the artisan work of boxwood, continuing a tradition well established in the Pyrenees, both Aragonese and Catalan and Navarrese, or in certain areas of Galicia or Cantabria.
This artistically gifted attorney started with reproductions of traditional Aragonese capacity measures like the bushel, the barracks and the bushel, giving them an aged appearance, as if it were an old piece.
And from there it began to manufacture, among other utensils and objects, scrapers, spoons and spatulas with different formats, or can openers and skewers, ideal for healthy and safe cooking, and to give a natural touch to the kitchen.
Utensils made by hand, in a totally sustainable way. Because the truth is that it does not throw a trocico made of wood, since even the spoons that break while working, soon find another use for them.
Their boxwood pieces were joined by others made with stone paper or Paper Stone (which is used for cutting and presentation boards or for costume jewelery), and they were complemented with bamboo bowls that were also handcrafted but brought from Vietnam, with some lacquers and colors. beautiful.
