With Diablo: Immortal receiving generally unfavorable reviews, Blizzard seems to be moving in a new direction. A new job posting on Blizzard’s website hints that a new, yet-to-be-announced survival game could end up with co-op multiplayer features.
Blizzard has been through a rough patch with all the scandals going on behind the scenes, including everything that’s going on with the controversy surrounding Diablo: Immortal. Blizzard has been trying to move forward on projects that were still in production like Overwatch 2, a new World of Warcraft mobile game, and Diablo 4.
On the careers page of the website Blizzard, there is a job listing for Senior Social Game Designer that has some clues about the type of game you are recruiting for. Blizzard has already announced this new survival game in a new world, but other than that not many details are known about it.
The job ad says that the successful candidate will “encourage gamers to engage with one another in both competitive and collaborative ways, forming new bonds of friendship or rivalry, and ultimately developing those bonds into meaningful relationships.”
Blizzard is no stranger to the co-op genre, with Warcraft and Diablo being its most notable IPs, even though World of Warcraft’s active player base has dropped dramatically since 2021. The idea of the game developer making a survival game Co-op set in a new world outside of its core IPs is a new, yet familiar, direction for Blizzard to move forward.
Not surprisingly, Blizzard’s new IP is going back to the roots it’s already known for. This new game could be a bit of a risky decision for Blizzard, as this new universe will be unknown to fans, but it could be a fresh start for the troubled company.
Blizzard has continued to work on its well-known IPs, but the company hasn’t ventured into building a new game world in a long time, so anything is possible.
