Black Adam It will hit theaters as a kind of promise to save the DCEU and turn it around. One of the most characteristic elements of the character is that it is a very violent one. An antihero who isn’t actually on Earth to save humanity, but to settle some personal scores. At least that’s how all his advances and a large part of his creatives promote it in interviews and press conferences. However, although his words may seem exaggerated, it seems that they are totally real because Black Adam it narrowly reached the public under the banner of an R rating, for adults.
According to the site Colliderproducers Beau Flynn and Hiram Garcia recently revealed that their Black Adam it took a long time to get rid of the R rating. Supposedly the film had to go through the scissors not once, but up to four times before the MPAA gave it a PG-13 rating for teens and adults.
Reason of course pursues violent ends. The very plot of the film explains that Black Adam is a kind of vigilante with a very strict sense of right and wrong. The only way to make his enemies pay is with an instant execution. Reason why he is persecuted by the Justice Society of America to make him see reason.
“We really wanted to make sure we honored the character of Black Adam. One of the things he’s known for is his aggression and violence, and making a movie out of Black Adam if it didn’t have that it just wouldn’t have been authentic,” the producers confirm. “So we always went into this knowing that we were going to take it as far as we did. We knew it was going to be a collaborative process with the MPAA to finally get where we could, to get that rating, but we were able to do it. But it was very important for us to do that. And that’s something Dwayne was very committed to as well.”
According to them, it was only “four or five weeks” ago that the film finally got a friendlier rating. As much as fans may think it’s a really good idea for the film to have an RA rating, the studio cares more about numbers. It is well known that an R-rated movie hardly manages to become a box office hit.
Therefore, to achieve these results some things had to be sacrificed. However, both Flynn and García assured that in the process of re-editing the film, they sought at all times that, no matter how much less violence was shown in the frame, the essence of the character would remain intact.
“We had to do a lot of editing, actually. There are some personal moments that we really love, but we had to let them go. But we never compromised, we never had to cut a scene. We had some really cool moments, and if you look, there are some really cool moments when Black Adam is in the flying bike chase sequence and he drops one of the soldiers between gangs. Then there’s this big moment where the truck bounces off the body. But those are moments that you need and remember in these movies, you know what I mean? You can’t play it safe, and you have to take a risk. And I think we have four or five of those. At one point we had about ten, and we were able to come to a compromise with the MPAA on that.”
Fortunately for fans, the pair confirmed that this version with more violence will probably be released later. Either in the physical versions or on platforms streaming. For this reason, this time DC fans will not have to organize campaigns of any kind to release cuts of their favorite movies.
The friendliest version of Black Adam It will hit theaters on October 20, 2022.
