This week I was reading all the statements that Bill Gates has made about Artificial Intelligence (AI), he believes that instead of wanting to stop the rapid advance of AI tools, one must know the “enormous benefits” they have, at the same time while difficult areas that need to be addressed are identified.
After the great launch of ChatGPT, and the incredible marketing of MidJourney, some global technology leaders like Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak, Skype co-founder Jaan Tallinn, Tesla’s Elon Musk, among many others, have reflected and stated their concern that such advanced AI systems can mean risks for society and humanity and ask that their accelerated progress be stopped.
Analyzing that not even the creators of the AI themselves, such as the large language models (LMM), GPT-3, GPT4, ChatGPT, Bing Chat, know or are aware of the scope of their tools, and cannot accurately predict Reliably, the behavior that the machines will have is that they make this request.
The “Future of Life” Institute, made a call to all AI laboratories, through a letter called: “FLI open letter: Pause the giant AI experiments.”, It is requested to “pause immediately for at least six months training systems more powerful than GPT-4”.
The petition was channeled through an open letter signed by the aforementioned leaders and others in the world of cybernetic and digital technology. Some of the questions that are asked are:
“Should we develop non-human minds that could eventually outnumber us, outsmart us, make us obsolete and replace us? Should we risk losing control of our civilization? Should we let the machines flood our information channels with propaganda and falsehood? ask the signatories of the document.
In this sense, in general terms, they propose developing more reliable systems, while promoting new security protocols and supervision systems.
It should not be forgotten that Bill Gates, although he has distanced himself from Microsoft, is the co-founder of the company and it is estimated that he still owns around 1% of the shares. The Redmond company is one of the cornerstones of the present of Artificial Intelligence. His investment of more than 10,000 million dollars in OpenAI and that dramatically boosted the company led by Sam Altman, but that was not the only great contribution.
The most advanced language models (and possibly those that are cooking) have been trained on the supercomputers of Azure, Microsoft’s powerful cloud infrastructure. Additionally, both ChatGPT and Bing Chat operate in a network of 60 data centers, also in Redmond, located in different parts of the planet and powered by the latest in NVIDIA technology.
The letter was also signed by approximately 1,100 characters from this digital world, including Emad Mostaque, Yoshua Bengio, Andrew Yang, Connor Leahy, and Yuval Noah among many more.
