For the first time in its six decades of history, the ceremony for the best of national cinematography will leave Mexico City. The 2023 edition will take place in Guadalajara, marking the beginning of traveling Ariel awards throughout the Mexican Republic.
This important announcement was made at a press conference in the capital of Jalisco with the participation, among other figures, of Leticia Huijara, president of the Mexican Academy of Cinematographic Arts and Sciences (AMACC), and Enrique Alfaro Ramírez, governor of the entity.

“With this ceremony, the AMACC inaugurates a long-cherished dream of its members: leaving Mexico City. Promote meetings with all those colleagues who make films from very different regions of the country and also with our very different audiences that inhabit them”, said Huijara. “Decentralizing the ceremony that rewards the excellence of Mexican cinema is taking a firm step in recognizing the diversity of voices and views that make up the universe of our industry. It is embracing the plurality that regional artists bring to our cinematography”.

In November 2022, the AMACC announced that they are going through a serious financial crisis due to cuts in support from the federal government. It was not until last February when the Academy finally launched the call for Ariel 2023, in the midst of an “uncertain” economic situation. And although they were far from resolving how to solve all the activities linked to the awards, they trusted in “the continued solidarity and commitment of the film community” to make them a reality.
The president of the AMACC later thanked the people and institutions that have made it easier for them to take this step to inaugurate a “travelling Ariel”. However, Enrique Alfaro expressed that they will do everything possible to convince them that the awards will remain for “many years” in that entity.
“Being able to have the Arieles here is great news, because we know the difficulties they have gone through [en la AMACC]”, commented the governor of Jalisco. “I had to read messages from the great Guillermo del Toro, our countryman, showing solidarity and, from that, we decided to establish contact with you to put Jalisco’s interest in hosting this event on the table.”
The appointment for the 65th edition of the Ariel will be the Saturday, September 9, 2023 in it Degollado Theater in Guadalajara, Jalisco.
