The Mexican president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, said this Tuesday that the Argentines scored an “own goal” with the victory of the far-right libertarian Javier Milei in the presidential elections last Sunday.
“To put it in a word, with all due respect, it was an own goal, and I do not agree, although I respect the decision of the people, with right-wing governments, I do not agree with classist, racist governments, I do not agree with hypocrisy, which is what characterizes the right,” declared the president.
“We respect the decision made by a majority group in Argentina, we respect that decision, although it is something that, we consider, is not going to help them.“He added in his morning press conference.
Milei, whom López Obrador has called a “conservative facho”, swept last Sunday with almost 14.5 million votes, more than 55% of the total, while Sergio Massa, Minister of Economy and candidate for Unión por la Patria (Peronism), he was left with 11.5 million votes.
The Mexican leader, who calls the current president of Argentina, the leftist Alberto Fernández, a “friend,” noted that “the people are sovereign,” but warned of the “antidemocratic elements used by the mafia of economic power and political power in all countries.” sides.”
“For example, the control of the media, the media control, is impressive in Argentina, in Chile, everywhere, in Mexico, but there it is worse, there is a lot of manipulation,” he said.
Asked about the future relations of his Government with the next Milei Administration, he responded: “We are going little by little, slowly, we are not in a hurry.”
Milei’s election occurs while Argentina faces year-on-year inflation of 142.7%, 40.1% poverty and an exchange rate gap of 200%.

In this context, López Obrador ruled out that in Mexico, where there will be presidential elections in 2024, there is a “risk” of electing someone like Milei.
“Here we do not have that risk, there is nothing to fear, the people of Mexico are very aware, they are one of the most politicized people in the world and they know very well that right-wing governments only favor minorities, they are defenders of conservatism, they are the right-wing governments employed by the oligarchies,” he commented.
