If you are one of those who have not yet given iOS 15 a chance, you have a security update to iOS 14.
Apple has released new updates for the iPhone this week and we can already install iOS 15.1 on our devices. These updates introduce new features, but they also fix discovered security holes, so it is always highly recommended to install them. And now Apple has released iOS 14.8.1 for those users who have stayed in the previous version.
With iOS 15, Apple has made the decision not to force users to install iOS 15 to receive security updates, although all iOS 14-compatible devices can install iOS 15. For that reason, if you are one of those who has stayed on iOS 14, you have a security update waiting for you.
iOS now offers the choice between two software update versions in the Settings app. You can update to the latest version of iOS 15 for the latest features and the most comprehensive set of security updates. Or continue on iOS 14 and keep getting important security updates until you’re ready to upgrade to the next major version.
It is not something strange in Apple to update previous versions of iOS. The company has released updates from previous versions many times, recently released iOS 12.5.5.
Apple’s release notes for the update to iOS 14.8.1 simply say that “Provides important security updates and is recommended for all users”. Don’t expect anything new, those are reserved for iOS 15, which you can install whenever you want.
Along with the release of iOS 14.8.1, Apple has released its security update notes that show fixed bugs related to audio, ColorSync, Continuity Camera, CoreGraphics, GPU Drivers, IOMobileFrameBuffer, Kernel, Sidecar, Status Bar, Voice Control and WebKit.
Personally, I don’t think there are many users right now on iOS 14 who don’t want to upgrade to iOS 15, which has proven to be a fairly stable version. But if there are any left, with iOS 14.8.1 your iPhone will be more secure.
