Apple Music has announced (via TechCrunch) you are using the shazam technology to include new DJ mixes on the platform and credit the original creators. It is the first time that the company makes use of the Shazam algorithm, a service it acquired in 2018, outside of the application itself.
Specifically, the integration of Shazam technology in Apple Music will allow spot the creator of the original song. In this way your name will appear in the mix and you will be able to receive the respective financial compensation. This is especially useful when the mix incorporates original music from different artists. DJs, singers, record labels or other companies that are involved in mixing the song, will also appear credited and the proceeds will be divided among all of them.
This integration will also allow Apple increase your song catalog on Apple Music, most of these will feature lossless audio. The company has confirmed that it is working closely with DJs to add additional tracks. The changes, sadly, only apply to professional creators, and not to independent DJs.
Apple Music takes a step further from Spotify
The use of Shazam technology in Apple Music is undoubtedly very good news for original artists and mix creators. It is also for Apple, which gain advantage over Spotify. The Swedish service, like most streaming platforms, does not allow many of the mixed songs to be published due to copyright.
It is not the first time that Apple has gained an advantage against it thanks to the use of its technologies. The company announced a few months ago the possibility of listen to songs with spatial audio and Dolby Atmosas well as lossless audio at no additional cost on current Apple Music subscriptions.
Shazam, remember, was bought by Apple in 2018. The app uses a series of algorithms to identify the song that is playing in the environment and display it on the smartphone. The first change the company made after the purchase was to remove the ads from the app. In addition, it did not take long to improve the integration with Apple Music and adapt the interface. It was not until 2020 when Apple began integrating Shazam into iOS through the possibility of including a shortcut in the control center.
