Apple is doing all it can to get enough iPhone 12s to meet the high demand they are enjoying (and also suffering ) for this new generation of their smartphone.
Apparently, the lack of some components in sufficient quantity is holding back the production increase that Apple is requesting from its suppliers. In the same Nikkei article in which they announce that Apple is preparing to manufacture 2.5 million MacBooks with ARM CPUs, they also reveal the curious detail of the deviation of some common components with the iPad in order to comply with the increase production of the iPhone 12, before a demand that is much higher than initially expected.
Let us remember that all this happens at the same time that Apple prepares to launch the iPhone 12 Pro Max and the iPhone 12 mini, two models that arrive a few weeks after the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Pro due, precisely, to the difficulties that are having to produce them in a year as incredibly complicated as this 2020 is being.
The components they mention are power management chips and also the LiDAR sensor, so we imagine they are referring to the iPad Pro, although in the article they simply say iPad .
It is clear that this year and next 2021 it will be extremely difficult to produce as many smartphones as Apple needs each year. Right now, the waiting times to buy an iPhone 12 are around three weeks, so we are not talking about too long a waiting time.
