The WRC2 category of the World Rally Championship does not have a closed calendar and it is the drivers and teams that compete in the series who decide which rallies to compete in. This circumstance and the fact of being able to eliminate his worst result draw a scenario in which the WRC silver category can decide on ‘deferred’, as has happened in 2021. While Mads Ostberg disputed the RACC Rally without achieving the expected result in an event in which Eric Camilli scored the partial victory, Andreas Mikkelsen was proclaimed champion of the WRC2 category without wearing the jumpsuit.
Ostberg started as a favorite to achieve victory in the RACC Rally within the WRC2 category, but a puncture on Friday afternoon left him against the ropes. Eric Camilli was the new driver to beat with his Citroën C3 Rally2, although no one could intimidate the French driver anymore. Mads Ostberg’s fourth place finish prevented the Norwegian from scoring enough points to avoid his compatriot’s title. Andreas Mikkelsen thus celebrated the title from the service park, since the experienced pilot had traveled to the Spanish event to experience the atmosphere of the test.
Following this peculiar resolution of the WRC2 category title, Andreas Mikkelsen he assured: «It’s super weird to be a champion all of a sudden, without competing. It is also true that now it is very nice to go to the Monza Rally without any pressure, simply with the aim of enjoying and going all out. Andras Mikkelsen’s goal will be to round out his 2021 season with the Skoda Fabia Rally2 Evo from Toksport WRT, vehicle with which it has achieved three wins and a podium in the six events he has played so far. Furthermore, the Monza Rally may be Mikkelsen’s last before returning to the premier class if his move to M-Sport is consummated.
