The next series of starwars within Disney+, it will be Andora series chronicling the five years leading up to the events of the first standalone Star Wars film, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, premiering August 31.
And during an interview with Empire, its creator Tony Gilroyexplained the structure of the series, and to what he says, the scale of the story led to a behind-the-scenes block-directing approach, leading to Season 2 applying a one-year-per-block structure, offering the opportunity to explore the motivations and character arcs that led to explosive events within the film rogue one of Star Wars.
“The scale of the show is enormous”Gilroy says. “Directors work in blocks of three episodes, so we did four blocks [en la temporada 1] three episodes each. We looked and said, ‘Wow, that would be really cool if we went back, and used each block to represent a year. We will get closer a year with each block. From a storytelling standpoint, it’s really exciting to be able to work on something where you do a Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, and then skip a year.”
“Rogue One is more about an event than the actual journey of the characters. It’s pretty amazing to start a show where it’s not about where we end up, but how we end up there”Additionally, Gilroy discussed the series’ timeline, explaining that they considered a five-season approach that could have allowed the story to unfold in real time.
“We always thought it would be interesting to cast someone who had so many accomplishments in Rogue One, who has so many skills. He’s obviously a leader and a seducer and he’s able to change his mind and he’s creative and he’s also soulful and he’s going to deliver for the galaxy.” And it was like, well, if you’re going to start five years early, what’s the longest possible trip you could take? So we put him in a big hole when we started. So five years early, he’s a very different man. So looking at you wants to see people change.”
“Originally we thought, oh, maybe we’ll do five seasons, but it’s just the scale of the show, I think when the show comes out, everyone will forgive us for not doing that. This is the show is huge and it’s just physically impossible. So we thought, what are we going to do? And then the answer turned out to be incredibly elegant and perfect. Which is because we knew where we wanted to go. Every once in a while you get really lucky and the solution turned out to be really lucky for us.”concluded the creator.
