Box contents
Trust has taken care of everything related to the external appearance of the box. On the front you can see a full size image of the mouse along with a brief description of the main features. On the back we have much more information and at a first glance we can see everything that the Trust GXT 980 Redex offers. It is worth mentioning that the box is quite big considering the size of the mouse. It could be a little smaller. However, this may be so that the mouse is not damaged in the event of a knock.
Once we open the box we find the mouse well protected, a USB cable to charge the battery and a quick user guide. This is all. It comes with just what you need. In this sense it complies, without further ado.
first sensations
As soon as you take the mouse out of the box and hold it in your hand, the first thing that strikes you is its weight. To carry an integrated battery it only weighs 86 grams. Okay, he’s not the lightest, far from it, but he’s not bad at all. As for the finishes, a well-constructed mouse is appreciated and does not give the feeling of being of poor quality plastic, rather the opposite. It is well put together and does not creak anywhere.
At the top are the typical left and right buttons, the scroll wheel and one button to change sensor sensitivity. In addition, there is also a sharing where the USB RF 2.4 GHz receiver is.
Flipping the mouse over we see two switches. One of them allows change the Hz of the polling rate (polling rate), while the other is used to turn on the Trust GXT 980 Redex. On the latter, you can turn it on with the lighting on or off.
The connector to charge the battery is USB type C and is between the two buttons on the top. We could say that goes unnoticed. Once you connect the cable does not bother at all if you are using the mouse.
On the left side there are two buttons and the surface is completely smooth. By the way, here I miss the typical rubber grip they have other mice on the sides. It is not something that influences much, but it never hurts to have this, let’s call it extra, to improve support while we play.
Unlike on the left side, on the right there is nothing. This could be a big inconvenience for all those who are left-handed. Putting another two buttons on this side would solve the problem.
From my point of view, and in general terms, I could say that Trust’s new mouse looks great. With that said, let’s see how my experience has been after using it for a couple of weeks.
user experience
I recognize that I didn’t expect much from this mouse when they told me if I wanted to try it, so I wouldn’t be disappointed later. Luckily, in the end it was the opposite. It was to connect the 2.4 GHz RF receiver to one of the USB ports on the computer, adjust the polling rate and DPI to my liking, then tell myself, hey, it’s not bad at all. It is worth mentioning that there are no drivers to install. Just plug in the USB RF 2.4GHz receiver and turn on the mouse. It is done!
I was first testing it on a mouse pad and found the scrolling to be very good, as was the accuracy of the sensor. I was just browsing the internet and moving around Windows for a while. Next, I did the same thing, but without using the mat. The experience was still good, although as usual, the accuracy dropped a bit. Then I raised the bar and got on with Excel, Affinity Photo, Word, and other programs. As well, at all times gave the size. No problem when moving between the different windows and menus. At all times the movement of the cursor was very fluid and with a correct response time.
When talking about a gaming mouse, I had to try games yes or yes. I chose to try it with games like Tunic (playing with a controller is his thing), Cyberpunk 2077, Call of Duty: Warzone, Diablo III and Cities: Skylines. Here I had to change the sensitivity depending on the game. However, it was not an inconvenience can be done in real time pressing a button that is dedicated for this purpose. There is no need to open the GAMINGXTrust program. While the Trust GXT 980 Redex is not intended for professional competitive gaming, its tunable optical sensor (PMW3325) with up to 10,000 DPI behaves really well under all kinds of situations.
The buttons do not make much noise, rather the opposite, although they have the typical clicky of mechanical keyboards. Here has a lot to do with kailh switches. They are of good quality and have a shelf life of up to 80 million clicks. So, it has some switches that are not bad at all.
It’s time to talk about the battery. The Trust GXT 980 Redex integrates a battery that offers up to 50 hours of use on a single charge. Although the autonomy is lower if you have the lighting activated. In my case, most of the time I had the lighting off, it lasted about 45 hours. Let’s just say it met my expectations.
Going back to the topic of connectivity, not having Bluetooth can be an inconvenience in some cases. For example, I was using the mouse on my Surface Pro, and since I didn’t have Bluetooth, I had to connect the 2.4 GHz RF receiver to the only USB port on the device, making it impossible to use a USB stick if necessary. I suppose that adding Bluetooth would have directly affected the price of the Trust GXT 980 Redex and that is why they have dispensed with it.
GAMINGXTrust, a software to have everything under control
To get the most out of the mouse you have to install a program that is available on the Trust website. This software offers access to certain features of the mouse that are very interesting. The user interface is very intuitive and you can configure the mouse to your liking in a few clicks. Now, it is not that it allows you to do much. Here I find that it simply complies, without further ado.
When opening GAMINGxTrust we have access to the different settings from a menu on the left. For example, we can make adjustments to the buttons in case we are not happy with the factory settings.
Although the mouse has a button that is used to change the DPI, you can adjust the sensitivity by choosing a value between 200 and 10000. By default there are 7 settings: 800, 1600, 3000, 4800, 6400, 6900 and 10000. To change the value you just have to move a horizontal bar.
When making changes to the lighting I took a little disappointment. We can only choose between several effects and change the speed of them. It is not possible to choose the colors or create our own effects. However, we cannot forget that we are talking about an entry-level mouse. Asking for certain features that are normally exclusive to mid-range and high-end mice would not be fair.
Macro lovers rejoice. Macros can be easily created. What’s more, you also have the option to import and export. This only takes a few seconds. The theme of macros goes very well in certain types of games, for example, in MMORPGs.
So far the review of GAMINGxTrust, a software that could give more of itself. In addition, it is worth mentioning that only available for windows. Of course, the mouse can also be used in GNU/Linux, in fact, I was testing it in Ubuntu 22.04 and I did not have any problem, but it is not possible to create macros or make changes to the lighting. I mention this in case any of you use GNU/Linux as your main operating system and are looking for a gaming mouse. You can use it perfectly, but with some limitations. Perhaps by installing Wine it will be possible to use the Trust software, although I haven’t tested this.

Conclusions | Yes, the Trust GXT 980 Redex is worth it. It is a mouse that, if we take into account that it is only worth 39.99 euros, is surprising for being very balanced. It is totally valid for gaming and is very precise. I would dare to say that it is the exception that confirms the rule. Many times we associate cheap with poor quality products, and this is not always the case. Trust has shown that it is possible to get a good gaming mouse at a moderate price. That it has some shortcomings is clear, but we must bear in mind that we are talking about an entry-level mouse. |
