The Mexican Association of the Automotive Industry (AMIA) describes these increases as “good news”, but accepts that the improvement has been gradual, with ups and downs. At the end of 2022, production levels reached an annual advance of 9.2%, the first increase recorded since the health contingency began.
The favorable outlook for production also generates positive effects on the market. In the accumulated to April of this year, 412,736 new cars were sold, an advance of 22.5% compared to the same period of the previous year, when 336,841 units were placed.

Guillermo Rosalespresident of the Mexican Association of Automotive Distributors (AMDA), says that the increase in sales is due to a greater supply of vehicles assembled in China, the world’s largest producer. “China first took charge of satisfying its local demand and now it is in the expansion phase to other markets. It was one of the countries least affected by the semiconductor crisis, which has allowed it to direct its offer towards new horizons”.
Omoda, Jetour and Jaecco are three brands born in the Asian giant that have decided to venture into Mexico for the first half of this year, while other companies, such as Chirey and MG Motor, which also concentrate their production in China, continue to consolidate their place. in the local market.
Specialists anticipate that, as a consequence of a greater number of competitors, market shares will gradually decrease, a phenomenon that is already beginning to be observed, since they do not anticipate that the annual sales capacity in the country, which is around 1.1 million units, increase.
