Mass layoffs are far from over in Amazon. The company has reported that plans a new staff cut which will take effect in the coming weeks, and which will affect thousands of other workers. The workers reached will be added to the 18,000 who have already lost their place in the company since last November.
Andy Jassy, CEO of Amazon, explained that the measure will impact some 9,000 employees in different areas. Among the sectors most affected are Amazon Web Services (AWS), advertising, Twitch and PXT (People Experience and Technology Solutions). “This was a difficult decision, but we believe it is the best thing for the company in the long term,” explained the executive.
From Amazon they assure that the economic uncertainty, both in the United States and globally, has led to the decision to reduce the staff, which in recent years had grown considerably.
What is truly striking is why the firm founded by Jeff Bezos announced this new wave of layoffs now, and not with the 18,000 that took place between the end of 2022 and the first days of 2023. According to Andy Jassy, that was because analyzes of all areas of Amazon where cuts could be applied had not been completed, and who chose not to rush.
Despite this, the company’s own CEO has acknowledged that it is not yet fully defined which roles will be removed on the affected teams. This means that Amazon knows that it will lay off 9,000 employees, mostly in the areas that we mentioned at the beginning, but that it has not yet defined who the people will be affected. The intention of the corporation is to elucidate it by the middle or end of April, at the latest.
