Amazon was not a little surprised when it realized the interest in the rights of the Champions League matches, buying a package for the transmission of a part of the matches of the well-known European competition. The surprise would be greater if Jeff Bezos’ giant won the Serie A ones.
In the last few hours, Bloomberg reported on Amazon’s concrete interest in the rights of the top football league in Italy. Amazon is therefore interested in bringing a part, or perhaps all, of the Serie A matches on its Prime Video platform. At the moment, the exact figures that Amazon intends to propose to participate in the tender are not known.
We certainly know that the Serie A-League has published a call for the assignment of TV rights for league matches for the period 2021-2024. Current contracts with broadcasters will expire at the end of the current season and Amazon’s interest may turn to several packages put on the table by the League. There are in fact several packages that can be purchased from satellite, streaming and digital terrestrial platforms.
Although Amazon’s plan is unclear, the news is not particularly surprising given that the Bezos giant, in addition to having already won the rights for the Champions League, has also bought part of the rights for the Premier League matches, the maximum English football championship, for the period 2019-2022. The announcement of the League will expire on January 26th, we will see how the situation evolves.
