In 1996 Olivier Assayas created a (now cult) film, which has a new version in miniseries format. call back Irma Vepbut now the protagonist is not Maggie Cheung but alice vikander.
In it we return to the fateful filming of the remake of The Vampires more than 25 years later. Paris is once again a key point and meeting place for Irma Vepa bet that Espinof experts have classified as “one of the most unique miniseries of the year”.
HBO Max has been in charge of bringing these characters back to life, who at times seem like the family of Succession (one of the best series according to the Emmys). It all starts with Look, an American movie star in the worst moment of his careerwho decides to change his life and accept a job in France to interpret to Irma Vep in a version of the French silent film classic, The Vampires.
But plunged into a strange shoot, everything gets complicated when the character becomes an obsession for the actress, who begins to mix reality and fiction. Vikander’s character is joined by Vincent Macaigne, who plays an obsessive director with anxiety problems, resigned to seeing his work on TV instead of in the movies.
And although this miniseries is a remake, and the creator and director Olivier Assayas himself knows it (who repeats as director for the series), this drama is a veiled criticism in which nothing is what it seems and that ends up becoming a loaded series cunning and excellently directed.
A must have hidden, hidden between blockbusters and hits like Privacy on Netflix (paradoxically as it happens to the protagonist of the series), which is ready to become the craziest and brightest thing we can see this week.
