According to a new report, Call of Duty would stay in PlayStation at least for the next three years. Fans have speculated a lot about the future of Call of Duty following Microsoft’s purchase of Activision, as it is one of the biggest franchises in the industry, and it’s hard to imagine it moving to just one platform. However, it’s also hard to believe that Microsoft spent nearly $70 billion and didn’t have a specific plan in mind for the franchise.
We have already discussed the possibility that Call of Duty abandon its annual releases, which has probably hurt the series more than it’s helped it lately. A new report by Bloomberg claims that Call of Duty will stay on PlayStation for the next three years. This means that the much-rumored sequel to Modern Warfare coming this year, Treyarch’s 2023 Call of Duty, and the sequel to Warzone will be on PlayStation. Microsoft has already stated that it plans to keep Call of Duty on PlayStation, but Sony has some contracts in place, which makes Microsoft’s statements obvious. At the moment, nobody knows what will happen after these three years.
At a minimum, a sequel to Warzone implies that there will be at least one Warzone game. Call of Duty with active support in PlayStation, even if the series becomes entirely exclusive to Xbox. Microsoft doesn’t own Activision yet, but the deal is expected to close in the summer of 2023. By then, Microsoft will likely begin mapping out the series’ future and determining whether or not it wants to solidify it as an Xbox-exclusive franchise. .
Rumors suggest that Call of Duty 2022 will be released in October and could be one of the last traditional installments in the franchise. Activision is expected to announce the game in the summer and it will likely be the last Call of Duty released before Microsoft officially acquires the publisher. Similarly, Call of Duty 2023 could also be the last main installment in the series in PlayStationBut that remains to be seen.
