It is common for the peripherals of one generation of consoles to end up completely out of date for the next and no compatibility method is offered, although things could be different on PS5. According to Sony’s latest patent, PS5 could receive compatibility with PS3 accessories.
As reported game rant Sony has registered a patent called “Systems and methods for converting legacy code into updated code”, which would be the compatibility of legacy accessories with PS5 for emulation purposes. This would include accessories like Eye Toy, PSP GO, DualShocks, Move controllers and something called “Legacy Card Reader”, according to a diagram of the registry.
Since it seems unlikely that in 2022, and beyond, we will play with the classic Eye Toy or the Move again, the interesting fact about this patent is where it says emulation. Until now, PS3 is incompatible with PS5 through emulationwhich is why the PS3 games from the new PlayStation Plus they can only be played in streaming on PS5. It is not the only drawback, since these PS3 games do not have downloadable content either.
This patent could be the first step before full PS3 emulation becomes a reality on PS5, although at the moment it is too early to get your hopes up. There are currently hundreds of PS3 games on PlayStation Plus that would benefit from this addition.
More video game patents
Another video game company that has been discovered a relative in recent days has been Nintendo. It is not very well known what the Japanese company is working on, but the record seemed to refer to some kind of peripheral that plays with touch, music and lights. If it ever comes to fruition, of course, many of these patents never make it into actual devices.
