In the center of Florence, a few steps from the Giardino dei Semplici, the second oldest botanical garden in the world, you will find this 65 square meter two-storey apartment Result of reforming the top floor (with high ceilings) of a 19th century palace.
The Italian studio Pierattelli Architetture has been in charge of this transformation that has resulted in a contemporary, functional and intimate apartment that adapts to the needs of its new owner, a young professional.
Color, light and geometry have been the keys to achieving this transformation. The design features natural materials such as wood and stone combined with touches of color that provide warmth to rooms and glass elements that amplify spaces.
New distribution
The heart of the project is the open plan living room which includes a compact kitchen with a peninsula from the Arclinea signature in an original petrol green color that gives character to the room and at the same time, contributes to differentiating the spaces. The Smeg freestanding refrigerator adds a touch of design, as does Zeppelin’s Flos pendant lamp. The dining room table and chairs have also been chosen for Italian design.
From this open space of kitchen, dining room and living room the rest of the more private spaces are accessed. Stairs lead up to the attic and a flush door leads to the master bedroom, which in turn opens onto an interior patio.
The spaces are designed to be comfortable and practical, and are divided in a clear but permeable way to let in light while ensuring the privacy and intimacy of its users.
The Florentine architecture firm has used the impressive original height of the former one-story floor to create a mezzanine for a second bedroom, private bath, and turkish bath.
A glass partition in burnished metal separates the two levels, but it also allows for a feeling of openness. As a result, the entire apartment is evenly bathed in light that shapes the interior spaces.
The access ladder to the mezzanine is made to measure and has a wooden finish to match the floor of the apartment.
The key color of the apartment design
The living room leads to the master bedroom, which is a contemporary space with stunning ultra blue wallsr. Despite its small size, nothing is missing. Wall sconces replace lamps and free up space on bedside tables.
A concealed door gives access to the kitchen room. Its design is completely hidden on the wall, next to the open wooden wardrobe that matches the parquet floor and the mirror frame.
The rooms feature soft, natural tones that add a warm and inviting feel (including petrol green in the living room and a stunning ultramarine blue in the master bedroom), while the dark oak flooring gives uniformity to the spaces. The overall result is a fresh and open apartment in which additional spaces and volumes are combined with an elegant use of materials and colors.
In the bathroom, it has been chosen to create a classic environment in line with the location of the space and is lined with large carrara marble tiles which can also be found in the other bathroom (the one in the attic), which is accessed through a floor-to-ceiling glass door.
The private and compact penthouse includes a second bedroom in sage green tones that is repeated on the back wall and on some pieces of furniture, such as the armchair (Cila de Arper model).
In this space, the private bathroom stands out and the Turkish bath clad in Bisazzatiles mosaics which are also green in color. The two bathrooms in the house have black taps that stand out from the carrara finish and give the apartment a contemporary style.
