A Plague Tale Innocence was one of the most amazing games of the past year 2019. The story of Hugo and Amicia captivated us both at a narrative level and at a playable level, with gameplay focused on stealth and fleeing from hordes of rats. This new installment promises to give us more and better, with a notable improvement in the technical section and with new skills for both brothers. Asobo Studio intends to consecrate this IP with A Plague Tale Requiem and slip back in among the surprises of the year.
In this first preview of A Plague Tale Requiem we have been able to enjoy two chapters of the main adventure, these two chapters are part of the middle of the game, so we don’t know much about what the beginning of the story is, nor are we approaching the end of it. Asobo Studio has counted on us to bring you a preview of A Plague Tale Requiem. It should be clarified that the version we have played has been the PC version. A Plague Tale Requiem will arrive on October 18 on consoles and PC and will be available from launch day on Xbox Game Pass.
With great power comes great responsibility
In these first impressions we do not want to make many spoilers regarding what little we have been able to know about the history of this sequel, but inevitably we have to talk about A Plague Tale Innocence. If you have played the first installment of this saga, you know that the relationship with rats changes from the start of the game. Hugo, the youngest of the brothers, has a special connection with these beings and can use their presence to offer us information.
At first, Hugo uses the presence of the rats to feel the enemy soldiers that are hidden in a room. This is an important element, since it marks the enemies around us and allows us to develop strategies to go unnoticed. That connection between Hugo and the rats is evolving until control small hordes of rats. This new ability allows us to be able to kill enemies directly by taking advantage of these hordes of rats.
A premise that we have seen during these two chapters is that there is constant talk of the concept of not losing control. Being able to control hordes of rats is something very powerful, but you have to know how to control yourself and not become a merciless bloodthirsty killer. This mantra seems to be one of the main themes that will be dealt with throughout the story. To put you in context, Hugo and Amicia are looking for a boat to find their family.
Responsibility does not only have to do with Hugo, Amicia is his older sister and she has to control her brother and also be an example for him. One of the novelties introduced in A Plague Tale Requiem is the possibility of stabbing enemies if we have a knife. This new installment seems to be more raw and appeal to the player’s morality to resolve conflicts in different ways. If you use your resources well, you can go unnoticed by enemies and don’t need to kill any (with a few exceptions), or you can take a more violent route and unleash mayhem.
In order to have these possibilities, you must have resources that allow you to explore them. Throughout the levels we have workbenches that allow us to upgrade different items with the necessary resources. Each of the elements that we have such as the slingshot, the crossbow or the alchemy have a series of skills to unlock and that enhance their performance. We also have different skills for Amicia such as caution, aggressiveness or opportunism. In this preview we have not been able to delve into the evolution of these skills because we could not unlock new levels.
The manufacture of different materials is still something important and characteristic of the saga. We will have to go through the scenarios to be able to collect materials which in turn allow us to manufacture others. Items like the Ignis, the Extinguis or the Brea They will be essential both to make our way with the rats and to face the soldiers who persecute us.
An exciting technical section
If I had to keep only one thing from this first contact with A Plague Tale Requiem, it would be its technical invoice. The 2019 game was already a game with a great graphic section and in its update to new generation consoles that potential increased. This second installment goes one step further and seems destined to become one of the graphic ceilings of what we have of the new generation.
The improvement is not only at a graphic level or in detail in the main characters, the secondary characters are much more detailed in this sequel and even his facial expressions have improved a lot. The scenarios have gained in depth and size, despite the fact that the game is still linear and does not allow much to get lost exploring, the feeling of being in a wide space is much greater.
During these few hours that I have spent in the world of A Plague Tale Requiem, I have been left with two details that speak of how well cared for the title is. In the first bars of the first chapter that we play, we walk through some fields of grass in which a depth and a amazing detail on plants and how they deform in our path. The second detail was when stepping on the sand, footprints stayed completely perfect on the ground in real timesomething that for a game that is not a triple A shows the care that has been taken in the development and that has been taken into account down to the smallest detail.
